Red Rocks and Winding Road to Flagstaff

Leaving Prescott, AZ brought us through the small town of Jerome on our way to visit Sedona.  Jerome is built on a hillside and the town looked like a cool place to stop and browse, unless you are pulling a camper. We weren’t able to stop but we will plan our visit better next time.

We drove into Sedona, made a quick stop on the top of the Mesa, by the airport, to get some impressive views of the valley and then found a nice RV lot to park in so we could grab some lunch.  Of course we had some excellent Mexican food, at a dog friendly restaurant, the Javelina Cantina.

We drove down the Red Rock Scenic Byway (a great way to see the colorful mountains around Sedona) to Montezuma Castle National Monument, an impressive ancient cliff dwelling inhabited between AD 1100 and 1425. The five-story main structure had about 20 rooms and was built over the course of three centuries.

On the route to Flagstaff from Montezuma’s Castle we drove the Sedona–Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Road which started as an easy drive through a beautiful canyon and ended a long climb with many sharp hair-pin turns.  No vehicles over 50’ are allowed on the road.  (we cheated a little as we are 51’ with our camper)
