We pulled into our campsite, within the South Rim section of the park, and instantly had a rather large elk stroll past, totally unconcerned with anyone in the campground. After quickly setting up the camper we headed over to the Rim Trail and took in the view.
What can we say about the Grand Canyon? Incredible, impressive, awe inspiring… words cannot describe it. Everyone should make time to go and experience the expansive views.
The weather was chilly, but visibility was great. There were very few people, and we could see for miles and miles.
We had the chance to drive on the Hermit road which is closed to automobile traffic during the busy season. The road has 9 overlooks, each one a little different but all stunning. It ends at Hermits Rest, a small building that was designed and built in 1914 by Mary Colter, one of Grand Canyon’s most famous architects. It looks much like an old miner’s cabin with a gigantic fireplace in the center.
Overnight a storm passed through and dropped about 6” of snow. We had no shovel and Alan realized the camper steps are prone to slippery ice! But the dogs LOVED it!
We took another stroll on the Rim Trail and experienced a totally different canyon, the snow-covered sides, low cloud cover and sunshine peeking through the clouds added different contrasts, just adding to our positive impression of the park.
