We decided to take a short detour to add the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado to the trip. The tallest sand dunes in North America seem to appear out of nowhere as the rolling plains approach the Sangre De Christo Mountains. We hiked among the dunes and the dogs enjoyed their time off leash, which had been very limited on this trip. Lots of running and goofiness from the pair while we enjoyed the sunny Colorado weather.
The visitor’s center was informative and had interesting displays describing how the dunes were formed. Check out their web site if you are curious: https://www.nps.gov/grsa/learn/nature/geology.htm
We are really going to miss these mountain scenes!!
Driving from the Great Sand Dunes NP to our next destination we drove on a beautiful mountain road, the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway. We passed through interesting towns, Red River (with its own ski hill), Eagle Nest (8,216 ft), we crossed over the Bobcat Pass (9,800 ft) and weaved through the Cimarron Canyon.
