We decided to take a second go at getting out of the Minnesota winter. We wanted to have a new camper by now, but it didn’t happen. We did, however, upgrade the truck!
The route is similar to last year but with different campsites and different things to see. Instead of National Parks, we are exploring the world of Abandoned Places. We were going to go to Haunted Places but I (MK) got too scared while planning the trip so we changed it to abandoned with a slight chance of haunted.
Since MK’s parents are renting a place in New Smyrna Beach and MK’s son moved to North Carolina, a similar path to last year’s just made sense. However, we’re going further south this year to try to get warmer weather!
The dogs, Cece and Owen (aka: Odie) are with us and will surely make appearances in pictures later.
Let’s start 2024 by escaping the fridged Northland. How about an adventure around the southeastern USA?
What is in an adventure? First, you start with travel; 3 days of driving. Toss in some hardship: one missing roof vent, one scary thunder/windstorm, lots and lots of rain, a leaky tonneau cover, and some muddy dogs. Finish up with a healthy dose of discovery.
In the three days of driving we came across Laura Ingles Wilders birthplace (Closed till May), an abandoned school and an abandoned castle (which you’ll see later), and the site of Casey Jones’ fatal train accident (cuz why not?).
We also stopped for lunch on Route 66 at Vintage Cowgirl. Good freshly made food, including amazing homemade cheesecake!
